French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel after British demands

French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.

French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.

Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to disable the propellers of the vessels.

The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.

This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.

Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.

Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
